My background and first love is journalism. I have been a writer since my teens and during my time managing a bar in Shoreditch in the late 1990s, began writing for magazines with an interview with the Beta Band for sleazenation. and a spell working for a Brixton start-up ‘Second Generation’. That led me to joining the launch team of Nuts magazine (IPC Media) in 2002 and from there, to ITP in Dubai.
I immersed myself in the then-booming Middle Eastern art scene and after a fantastic period as Art & Culture Editor at Time Out Dubai and Arts Critic at The National, I was appointed Editor in Chief at the newly-launched Harper’s Bazaar Art Arabia, magazine in 2012. I ran this magazine for three years, before serious illness put my career on hold.
Once recovered and now based in Berlin, I freelanced until September 2019 on arts and lifestyle content and audio for the Financial Times, Interview, artnet.com, The Art Newspaper, Freunde von Freunden, Taschen, Der Spiegel and Vanity Fair, amongst many others, before returning to London, just ahead of the pandemic.
During 2021, I worked at The Spectator, producing the weekly ‘The Edition’ podcast, co-hosting weekly arts podcast ‘The Green Room’, as well as contributing print/online posts and articles.
Between 2021 and 2024 I was Editor at Sotheby’s in London, where I oversaw a substantial volume of articles, interviews and editorial series to complement and promote the auction house’s global activity. This role especially emphasised analytics-based content, utilising SEO and intense data analytics to drive Sotheby’s audience engagement and retention.
As well as relishing the challenge of creating lively, effective and punchy editorial and marketing strategies in response to a brief, my particular passion is for interviews, whether in print or audio. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have interviewed a vast variety of artists, actors, musicians, writers and public figures worldwide, from Yoko Ono to Imran Khan, Michael Caine to Bryan Ferry, John Cleese to John Cale, Benazir Bhutto to Alan Johnson.
